The International Symposium on Advanced Biological Engineering (ISABE’2010) was held from 23 to 25 July 2010 at Beijing Friendship Hotel in Beijing. This was my first time to take international flight at Haneda airport. The departure time was at 10h30 of 22 July 2010. It took about 4 h from Haneda to Beijing via JL023. However, it took only 3h and 20min from Beijing to Haneda on 26 July 2010.

Location of Beijing is shown in this map.

There were more than 250 participants coming from different corners of the world to join this symposium.

The bus 919 will bring you to the great wall. It costs 12 yuans and it takes about 1h30 to reach great wall-Badaling.  There were so many people waiting to get on the bus.

It was so crowded at that time.

We had a chance to have dinner at Chinese restaurant on 24 July 2010.

In this restaurant, the waitresses wear chinese traditional clothes to serve us. There was also dance performance.

Some of chinese food that we tried.

In front of Tian’anmen square, near Forbidden city. From Friendship hotel to this place, we need to take the train from Renmin university station to Xidan station and then transfer the train from xidan to Tian’anmen west.  In total, it cost 4 yuans.

Inside of the Forbidden City. The entrance fee is 60 yuans.

The exit of Forbidden city.

Walking about 10 min from Frienship hotel, there is one market where we can buy food. One thing that made me surprise was that the staffs at the counter will not provide you the plastic bags if you don’t buy. It costs 0.2 yuan for one plastic bag. And at the airport, it costs 1 yuan.

On the 2nd day, we went first to Kiyomizu temple. Famous sweets selling in Kyoto.

We then had lunch at Chinese Restaurant.

Our 2nd dinner at another hotel in Kyoto.

After dinner, we watched Maiko dancing.

My huge breakfast again in the hotel.

Kinkaku temple.

Buffet at Otani women’s hall (crafting).

We divided into 4 groups: first group made sweets, 2nd group made Japanese books, 3rd group decorated the bag, and 4th group decorated the ballon.   For me, I chose to make sweets.

I joined homestay programm organized by Hippo club through TIT from 14-15 November 2009. This was my first experience to stay at Japanese ‘s house and to have a host family.  I really enjoyed with them as they are very kind to me.

Momo-chan, Yuki-chan and their mother are good at decoration this. I was surprise and excited to receive this during the first time I met them.

I really envy them and thanks for their time.

That was my first time too to take picture with this machine. The kids really like taking photos with this machine so that they can add something on their photos. First day, I had dinner with other hippo club members.

Japanese breakfast prepared by Minie.  After breakfast, we went for the picnic at Tokyo See Life Park with momo-chan’s friends and their parents.

We tried to catch small crabs with other kids. Again, we took photos together. Even the time was a bit short for me but I really enjoyed because of their kindness.

Tanabata (七夕, tanabata?, meaning “Evening of the seventh”) is a Japanese star festival, derived from the Chinese star festival, Qi Xi (七夕 “The Night of Sevens”).It is always held on 07 July.

It celebrates the meeting of Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair). The Milky Way, a river made from stars that crosses the sky, separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar. The celebration is held at night, once the stars come out.

Pumpkin (Kabocha) June 20, 2009

Kabocha (katakana: カボチャ) is a Japanese variety of winter squash. It is generally believed that all squash originated in Mesoamerica, but may have been independently cultivated elsewhere, albeit later. The kabocha, however, was introduced to Japan by Portuguese sailors in 1541, who brought it with them from Cambodia. The Portuguese name for the pumpkin, Cambodia abóbora (カンボジャ・アボボラ), was shortened by the Japanese to kabocha. Certain regions of Japan use an alternate abbreviation, shortening the second half of the name instead to “bobora”. Another name for kabocha is 南瓜 or 南京瓜 (Nanking melon), which suggest that the vegetable arrived in Japan by way of China.

It is rich in beta carotene, with iron, vitamin C, potassium, and smaller traces of calcium, folic acid, and minute amounts of B vitamins.
